Moon jellyfish, like many other marine animals, often get washed up on beaches as currents or tides carry them towards the shore, where they quickly dry out and die. These jellyfish are small, translucent invertebrates found in oceans worldwide. This jellyfish is present worldwide in all our oceans in different subspecies of the Aurelia genus. These delicate creatures measure 5–40 cm in diameter and have existed for over 600 million years, outlasting even dinosaurs. Their simple, adaptable bodies have helped them survive multiple mass extinctions, often drifting in bays, harbours, and estuaries.
In the wild, moon jellyfish rarely live past six months, though they can survive just over a year in captivity. Their 95% water composition makes them lightweight and resilient, while their lack of a brain, blood, or heart sets them apart from most animals. Despite their simplicity, they’ve thrived in coastal waters across the globe.
Moon jellies are plate-sized, with a translucent white bell marked by four distinct purple circles—their reproductive organs. These circles are visible through their delicate, umbrella-like bodies. Their short, fine tentacles dangle from the bell’s edges, helping them capture prey.
These jellyfish are carnivorous, feeding on zooplankton, crustaceans, fish eggs, and larvae. They use a clever hunting method: coating their bells in mucus to trap prey, then transferring it to their mouthparts with specialised tentacles. Their diet relies on microscopic organisms, making them key players in ocean ecosystems.
Moon jellies exemplify nature’s efficiency. Without complex organs, they drift with ocean currents, relying on their adaptable bodies and passive feeding strategies. Their survival for hundreds of millions of years speaks to the success of their minimalist yet effective design.
