This sunrise reveals the stunning multicoloured sands of Rainbow Beach in Queensland. According to the Aboriginal Dreamtime legend, a young woman named Murrawar lived by the Noosa River. Every morning, she would clap her hands and sing, welcoming the rainbow that visited her. One day, a jealous tribesman named Burwilla kidnapped Murrawar, forcing her into slavery. While she worked tirelessly, Burwilla lounged in the shade, admiring his oversized, evil-spirited boomerang—the largest in the forest.
After months of captivity, Murrawar escaped, fleeing along the beach as fast as she could. Burwilla chased her, his massive boomerang hurtling through the air. Terrified, Murrawar stumbled and fell, too frightened to move. Suddenly, the sky roared, and her loyal rainbow raced toward her across the sea. The evil boomerang clashed with the rainbow in a violent collision, exploding with thunder and destroying the boomerang while shattering the rainbow into countless tiny pieces.
As the colored fragments of the rainbow rained down onto the sand, the dunes transformed magically into the vibrant, rainbow-like sands seen today. The legend explains the origin of Rainbow Beach’s breathtaking hues, a reminder of Murrawar’s courage and the power of the rainbow’s protection. The story lives on in the landscape, a tribute to the Dreamtime and the enduring beauty of the land.
