The Red Deer is Britain’s most iconic animal. They are the biggest land mammal in Britain. The largest stags weigh up to 225 kg (500 pounds) and stand over 1.4 meters (4.5 feet) tall at the shoulder.
Red Deer live in herds, usually led by females. The herd moves together, but when food is around, the oldest hind takes charge.
In the wild, Red Deer can live up to 20 years, but most average 14 to 15 years. In captivity.
Red Deer eat plants, leaves, and heather in the wild. Male Red Deer, or stags, grow antlers up to a meter long, used for defence and dominance. They shed their antlers every spring to save energy, then regrow them—a demanding process.
