The fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) is one of the most recognisable fungi, thanks to its vibrant red cap and white stalk, which have made it a staple in folklore, TV, and video games. This iconic mushroom thrives in woodlands, parks, and heaths, often growing near birch, pine, or spruce trees. Its striking fruiting bodies appear from late summer to early winter.
Like all fungi, the visible mushroom is just the fruiting body—the majority of the organism exists as a hidden network of hyphae, collectively called the mycelium. These structures produce spores for reproduction but can also spread asexually through fragmentation. The fly agaric often forms a symbiotic relationship with trees, wrapping around their roots to exchange nutrients for sugars.
Warning: Fly agaric is highly poisonous and should never be consumed. While deaths are rare, ingestion can cause severe stomach cramps and hallucinations.
Despite its toxicity to humans, some animals, like red squirrels, slugs, and fungus gnats, feed on it. The gnats even lay eggs on the fungus, and their larvae consume the fruiting body.
Fungi, including the fly agaric, play a crucial role in ecosystems by recycling nutrients from decaying matter and providing food and shelter for wildlife.
