Te Ana Au, named by the Rākaihautū group, discovered a large lake and, during a rainy period, named it “cave of rain” according to Māori legend.
Rākaihautū was the leader of the migration canoe Uruao, who named the great lakes while exploring the South Island’s interior.
Just south of it, they found another lake and named Roto Ua, which translates to “lake where rain is constant,” now known as Lake Manapouri.
The Kepler Range, where this image has been taken, lies between these two lakes.
Richard Henry, Fiordland’s first ranger, lived near the southern end of Lake Te Anau and frequently explored the Kepler area. Surveyor James McKerrow named the range after Johannes Kepler, the 17th-century German astronomer.
