The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is one of Australia’s most iconic birds, known for its long lifespan of up to 80 years. Its range spans mainland Australia (north and east), Tasmania, and parts of New Guinea and the Aru Islands. Introduced populations also exist in New Zealand, Indonesia, and Perth, Western Australia.
These cockatoos nest in tree hollows, which both parents prepare, incubate the eggs, and care for the chicks. The young stay with their parents year-round, forming lifelong family bonds.
Females lay 1–3 eggs, which incubate for about 30 days. The chicks fledge after 65 days. Breeding season varies by region, from May to September in Northern Australia and August to January in Southern Australia.
