The Australasian saltwater crocodile is the largest reptile on Earth and has remained one of the planet’s deadliest predators for over 100 million years.
These ancient creatures first appeared over 240 million years ago, during the time of the dinosaurs. While many species evolved, crocodiles retained their original form for 200 million years. Their survival—unlike that of the dinosaurs—has sparked curiosity, with theories suggesting their cold-blooded nature and freshwater adaptability helped them endure the Yucatan meteor impact and its aftermath.
Saltwater crocodiles can grow over 6 meters long and weigh nearly 1,000 kg, armed with 68 sharp teeth.
During the wet season, females lay up to 50 eggs in nests along riverbanks. The incubation temperature determines the sex of the hatchlings: cooler nests produce females, while warmer nests yield males. Despite this, only 1% of hatchlings survive to adulthood.
Contrary to myth, the idea that crocodiles “sleep with one eye open” is true. They achieve this through unihemispheric sleep, where one half of their brain remains alert to detect danger while the other rests.
